It isn't actually mine, which is the problem -- I'm renting and I don't want to cause any problems. Should I use cleaner? Just plain water? Liquid soap? Liquid dish detergent?

It is a really old building, so I suspect the wood is quite old as well -- it's definitely not the "wood flooring" that people use nowadays. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just think that this wood is quite old.

Most wood floors only need to be swept and cleaned with plain water. Do not soak. Use a sponge mop and wring it out before using. Since this is a rental, I would be very concerned about using something other than water. You may want to consult with your landlord before using anything else.

I have a wood floor which is over 2 hundred years old. I brush it every other day then bout once a week wash it with liquid floor cleaner about 1 cup to 3 litres hot water. Don't soak with water, keep mop pretty dry. That should keep it clean. If it is varnished don't use bleach or scrub it.

I was told by a professional in the business, never use anything other than a mild, vinegar/water solution to clean your wood floors.

How is the finish on the floor? If it's OK then damp mopping is fine. After it dries you may want to use a clean dry wax applicator or soft rags on your feet to buff it up since, as you say, it is older. Good luck!

NO MR.CLEAN! I had a horrible experience washing my hardwood floors in my 100 year old home! It basically bleached them! Use any thing "syrupie" such as murphy's oil soap. Good luck!

1 cup of white vinegar to a gallon of cold water, wring out the mop REALLY REALLY WELL, you do not want a "WET" mop, you want it "DAMP"
