I would like to do this with my brownie troop tomorrow but I'm at a loss as to what kind of items to find? It iwll be in the playground/common ground of an elementary school.
Should it be items I plant, or be items that nature leaves behind?

Depends on how competitive and knowledgable your kids are. Decide if you want to have an infinite number of things to find (nature) or a limited (once someone finds it, it's gone)
With Brownies, it might be best to make it a learning experience (Ask for Oak leaves, or other specific plant names)
Alternatively you could ask for items in the form of a (simple) riddle. Something like 'plant with 3 leaves' or 'leaf from desiduous(sp) tree', 'Something a squirrel might eat'. Make sure it's something they would possibly, but not definitely, know.
The final option is esoteric riddles. Find something for which the child's creativity will be taxed to find an answer. In this case almost any justification should be accepted. 'Something green but not a plant' 'Something that starts with R' are simple answers.
Also, consider the playground. If it's largely paved or monotonous, you may want to back up and consider planting items (eggs?) that are obviously what you want, but hiding them well, and giving clues to their location (in whatever riddle format you think up) instead of clues as to what they should try to find.
