after a pass around the perimeter, make a pass right down the middle. then back to one end and back to the middle, keep repeating this and you won't need to make those large horse shoe turns after every pass. its sort of like a series of overlapping loops.

HI the best way is back and forth and then go around the out side after you gone back and forth to clean up were you turn. also every other time mow the other way this makes for a golf course look. gene

I have tried different ways. My advice is to try different ways, as well, because it will vary by the terrain. But I also vary the direction to keep a pattern from forming.

Back and forth - but alternate directions each week or even go diagonal - this way it will not make wear marks by always going in the same direction
one week go north south, then east west the next week, then diagonal the 3rd week and back to north south

Back and forth at an angle to the boundaries unless you are on a hill...go up and down a hill (for safety sake to inhibit rolling).
