First of all, addressing the above people, there are a number of types of animals that mate for life and suffer when seperated. Man is not one of them though.
Animals and birds often appear to be "more" successful slecting mates because of several things:
First, survival is not assured for them. Those that are very unhealthy tend to die long before having the oppurtunity to mate. As do the really stupid...
Second, most animals and birds have some means of producing an "honest signal" as to their qulity as a mate. This can be plumage that takes an exceptional male to support or the success and survival throughout a competition with other males.
Third, there is not usually the assumption that there is a mate for everyone and everyone has a mate. If paternal care is not required, males don't often enter into long term relationships and mate multiply. With paternal care...
So, that's a start.

all animals (including humans) have different mating habits.
in a pride of lions the biggest mail gets all the females, some fish can change sex, some animals have one partner for life. some pick a new partner each time mating season comes around. a lot of animals fight for a partner. some animals leave sperm or eggs to be fertilised by whoever turns up etc

They mate without any regard to feelings, compatability, personal issues, etc. They mate and then move on... which is great for an animal. but I would think us humans have a more important role in this world and that involves a deeper emotion than survival of the fittest.
Either that or we are in somebodies fish bowl and this is all a game, but I still can't help but love my husband.

I can see that you don't watch many nature programs. If you did you would see that animals also have trouble finding suitable mates. The females are the ones who are choosy, just like humans. The male usually will go for anything and everything that he can get.
Also a precious few male animals are faithful loving husbands pass the act of matting.

The animals and birds don't have the same type and range of emotion and thought patterns as we humans, we humans are much more complex beings. So therefore, we cannot necessarily learn from them unless we lose the part of ourself that makes us human.

First I can't believe that animals have any criteria in finding partners, the only criteria is "sexual attraction". For humans its more complicated, because we by our hands made life more complicated. Humans in the begging acted like animals in catching the partner, later on, the number extended, people divided into countries and races, they become more civilized, their requirements become more complicated (not only food & sex), and thats why it become more difficult for individual to find his match. Its un-acceptable to return back rather than going forward.
