Yes, if you are a business (of any size). Shredding of personally identifiable information is mandated by the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA) as well as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

If you are an individual then shredding SSNs is just common sense.

It is not a law, but if you are a business that deals w/that kind of stuff, your company probably has a privacy policy. If you have a privacy policy and that information gets stolen b/c you did not shred the info, you could be looking at a very bad lawsuit. If you are an individual, there is no law, but it is a good idea.

A person? No...there is no law, it's just the smart thing to do. As a company dealing with sensitive customer information, then yes you have a duty to shred that information if you are getting rid of it.

Are you asking if a company that has a copy of the receipt that they issued you and that receipt has your personal information on it, do they have to shread their copy?

I think there is some new law that requires that, but I am not 100% sure.

No, but it is a smart thing to do. Anything with ssn#'s, credit card account numbers should be destroyed to help prevent identity theft.

No! But its common sense to do so. I even shred my bank statements, and phone bills and any bill with my name one it.
I'm not paranoid, just do it because it is easy to do and ..just to be safe.
