I've had both, and in my opinion, both are awesome pets. It depends a lot on their individual personalities and what you are looking for. Nothing beats a dog's bark to warn of an intruder, but then again, nothing beats a dog's bark in terms of being a major annoyance when you have a dog that LIKES to bark! *lol* I've had cats that were as sweet and attentive as a dog, following me all over, butting my hand with her head so I would pet her, never vicious or mean, and I've had dogs that were as moody as a cat, not wanting attention, but then actually rubbing against my legs when she wanted me to play! Most dogs that are well socialized will be wonderful, and most dogs do get along with most people. What I absolutely love about cats (call me crazy, but I do like this) is that they CHOOSE their people. A cat won't let just anyone touch them-you have to win the cat over ; it is an honor the cat gives you, to let you touch him. I personally think this is the coolest thing ever. A cat owns you, not the other way around. But a dog is a wonderful companion in terms of being able to take him with you almost everywhere-jogging, to the beach, on road trips, etc. You have to have a very special cat to be able to do that. My cat loves car rides, but she really doesn't like walking on a leash. *lol* (I tried, after hearing that some cats will do this.) I love my cat and wouldn't change her for the world, but I do miss having a dog sometimes. But it's hard to have a dog when you live in a carpeted rental and work 8 hours a day-that's where having a cat is just easier.
I say both; it depends on the person and on the individual cat's or dog's personality. You really can't generalize too much once you get to know them! :)

My family had 2 dogs when I grew up. The first was deeply entrenched as the family pet, the 2nd was given a new home because it barked. Then we somehow transitioned to cats.
As an adult we've mostly had cats, usually 3 at a time. We had a dog who lived 16 years, and we'd like another one, but we don't seem to be in any hurry.
Cats are fun to watch and have attitude, dogs are so trusting and loyal and I love those qualities, too.
Neither is better, just different.

It depends if you want a friend for life which is what a dog is or an animal that could care less about you except at feeding time - which is what a cat is...So my answer is DOGS!!

dogs only act like that if they have not been properly trained and taken care of... i love dogs, especially big dogs... but cats are great too... but you cant really run around in the yard with a cat or take it for a walk.. unless you got a pretty special kitty..

A german shepherd can drag you out of a burning building. A cat would just run.
