She definitely writes adult books. Just because she writes many stories with a child's perspective, her themes are definitely adult. Though, since she deals with a lot of "coming-of-age" issues, I'd say some could be good for someone in their late teens.

Since her book "House on Mango Street" deals with a Latina girl growing up amongst poverty & alienation (things she drew from her own life), I would say that is a children's book.
