I highly recommend two programs.
1) AVG antispyware
2) Superantispyware.
These two are very effective and they are free.

If you have genuine Windows XP, then you can download use Windows Defender from Microsoft's website. It is only one of the two free anti-spywares that comes with real-time protection and is pretty decent. The only hitch is that it updates about once in 4-5 days, and its heuristics is virtually non-existent. Still, all in all I will give it a 8/10, which is very good considering it is free. The substitute to Windows Defender is Spyware Terminator. It beats Defender in all respects - it updates daily (almost), it has a much stronger real-time protection, it comes embedded with an anti-virus, it has better heuristics and it can even track down malware that have embedded into the Explorer.exe process. But, it too has a let-down. The alert messages are just a bit TOO many. Even in the beginner mode, it will eat your head with alert messages. Still, I give it a 8.5/10. No other free anti-spyware comes with real-time protection, so you can keep them as substitutes.
Some good free anti-spyware may be found in the 'Anti-Spyware' list of the given link:

Here is a simple tutorial on how to cleanup your computer. They are real basic steps, but it is a good first step to take and will often clean out 95% of the junk (such as spyware, viruses, etc) off your computer. All the tools used are free of use. Here is the link:

one of the best free spyware removal programs is adaware. Go to download.com and search for it. Also spybot is very good as well. you can get that program on that site as well. You can run more than one spyware program but not more than one anti-virus program.

There is a site called majorgeeks.com. This site has valuable information on setting up your computer for maximum efficiency. This link will take you to that file.......http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=885308#post885308
