As an earlier answer stated, remember that Droughns was traded to the Giants for a wide receiver. Therefore, the Browns seem to be relying (at this point) on Jamal Lewis. Whether or not Lewis will be an improvement over Droughns may depend on Lewis' health. Lewis has been hampered by injuries the last few seasons, and he claims that this hampered his speed and ability to make cuts. When healthy, there is little doubt that Lewis is one of the best backs in the league, and he is still young enough to have a few great seasons.

It is also important that the Browns only signed Lewis to a one-year deal. Lewis will therefore be motivated to work hard and play well for a better contract next season.

It is hard to suggest that the Browns will be much better simply based on replacing Droughns with Lewis, however. The move isn't significant enough by itself to propel the Browns to being a Championship contender.

If Kevin Bentley can return from his knee injury, and the Browns sign a tackle in the first round, the offensive line could immediately become one of the best in the league. This would make Lewis (and Frye and the rest of the offense) better, and the Browns much better as a team. They also need to address the aging defensive line to be a contender. If the team were to take the field right now, it would be hard to imagine them doing much better than six wins in a very good division.

I don't think so. Somebody stated that a few years ago Jamal ran for 2k yards. But a few years makes a lot of difference on how good a HB is. His knees are going, the brown's o-line is still a mess (although maybe better with the bengal's old lineman), and he has another thing going against him. He used to play the Browns twice a year (big whooping deal, no run d there), now he has to play the Ravens twice a year (say hello to the business end of Ray Lewis!). I'm not a Brown's fan, but I liked Rueben, and think he ran with power, and I don't see that in Jamal...

The Browns should be a bit better with Jamal Lewis in the backfield because he's a proven 320-350 carries a season type of bruising runner. Droughns wasn't as durable and therefore was dealt to the NY Giants. Remember that Jamal rushed for over 2000 yards just a few years ago and that's very hard to do. LT, as great as he is for the Chargers, hasn't even broken the 2000 yard plateau...

Unfortunately Jamal Lewis is done. I think the Ravens realized that. To be a great rusher in todays NFL 1000 won't cut it; you need to be rushing upwards of 1300 yards. I don't think Jamal has that in him unless he is on a team with a great line.

He may go over 1000 yards this year (if he stays healthy), but that will be it unless he finds a better team.

The browns will always suck, even if they got a new O-line and Defense to compliment Jamal Lewis.

I think the Brownies will be drastically improved next season, however, I think it will be more about the improvements they've made on the offensive line(Steinbach, McKinley, and re-signing Fraley) than at QB.....Lets just hope big Joe Thomas falls in our lap at 3 and we'll have one of the better lines in the AFC North

And for the guy that replied earlier about Lewis being older than Droughns......Lewis is 27, Droughns is 29

Nope, more likely they will be worse. Lewis is on the downside of his career, not deep into it mind you but still on it. They still aren't going to have the O-line to provide the running lane, the Back doesn't make a difference there.

They traded in their only 1000 yard rusher in the last 20 years for someone who is:

1. Older
2. Slower
3. Injury prone
4. And a bad locker room guy

They might be going after Adrian Peterson in the draft.
