In Ireland, it finally gave up this morning, stuck in a bus lane in rush hour traffic for an hour before I got towed away, and that cost €100!! Would my insurance cover some of these costs? And before any of you say I know a Fiat is Fix it again tomorrow, heard it loads of times

Fiat dealerships in the UK display a pricing board with popular applications on it , or phone and ask how many hours labour is involved, a reputable smaller garage will have an appreciably lower hourly rate. and can't say the job takes any longer, a gearbox re conditioner from yellow pages may be the most cost effective option here.
Information the punto engine is the Italian fire pump engine (as was the Coventry Climax Engine fitted in the early Lotus Elite which produced in excess of 130BHP in 1962 for a 1207cc engine)and is a safe engine as the valves do not protrude beyond the combustion chamber and therefore cannot bend the valves if the timing belt snaps. remind people of this when they belittle a fiat punto.

New clutch £150
Cant remember how much my gear box was.
Dont think your insurance will cover the costs.
I take it you did not have break down recovery.
