A Not Guilty plea to a charge of Common Assault would result in a trial at a Magistrates Court where the maximum sentence imposed could be a fine of five thousand pounds and/or six months imprisonment.

In my experience the typical sentence would be a fine and a Community Order which generally involves working so many hours on a community project without pay and taking some kind of Anger Management Class. You could also receive a Conditional Discharge which means you are not punished so long as you do not break the law within a certain specified period of time otherwise you could be re-sentenced for the original offence. Finally, another option is that you receive a Suspended Sentence whereby the Magistrates may give you a Custodial Sentence but you will not have to serve that time in prison if you behave yourself for a specified period of time.
