Just pulled the engine and noticed alot of metal shavings around the torque converter and bellmouth housing. Im planning on getting a new torque converter anyway and have never had issues with the transmission. 3 speed automatic C-6. No discoloration or shavings in the fluid noticed.

If this is the first time the tranny has been pulled in 39 years, it's most likely normal wear on the flexplate from the various starters installed over the years. If it's a more recent problem, it's from an improperly-shimmed starter. Check for gouges/missing edges from the teeth on your flexplate. Replace as necessary.

Sounds like you may have engaged the starter while the engine is running and the metal may be particles of the starter drive teeth or flexplate teeth. Check the starter drive gear and flexplate for wear.

Flywheel, starter motor gear teeth. If the starter motor was ever replaced the metal could be from the stripped gear on the old one.

make sure none of the bolts in the front of the trans or behind the flywheel have come loose --- i have seen loose bolts before rubbing against the flywheel or the torque converter

it could be your flywheel rubbing or your starter could be missing just enough too. but if you don't have any problems that are noticed and you have the money than replace parts and move forward...............good luck.
