If you have a valid prescription from a valid doctor, you can buy them online. Why you would want to is beyond me. You should take it to your local pharmacy and have it filled. Then you'll know you are getting the right medication and not fake pills from someplace on the Internet.
If you don't have a prescription and you try to buy these pills (which again, are usually fakes) then yes, it IS illegal. It's felony prescription fraud.
5-10 years. Don't think you'd get caught? LOLOL. Think again. The DEA is all over those sites just waiting for you.

In USA, it is probably illegal to buy a non-OTC drug (medicine) without a prescription. Of course it 'is' illegal to sell the prescription medicines without a prescription! But if they can't trace those guys, they can trace you!
In India, rules are there but are a little more lax. When things go wrong, the police swings into action, otherwise, you can get a good number of prescription meds without one.

You may not get the exact ingredients in medications that are bought online. You don't always know what country they are coming from. I've heard that for a long time. I don't know about breaking the law, but what goes into your body is more important.
