I like to pick up all the little travel flyers and booklets that list the events, places of interest, sometimes a map and read the list before starting out. It also helps to look everything up on the internet. The first day may be a once a year festival and you would miss it by heading out in a different direction to see a cave that would be there tomorrow.

The reason I came to the town in the first place. . . which would probably either be for an amusement park, a landmark or great, man-made or natural phenomenon.
If visiting for no reason in particular, I'd say the architecture or choice in restaurants.

The Cemeteries,.. (the old ones).
You can learn alot about a town by strolling among its dead.
