why do germans wink?

I find it quite.. unbelievable that germans likes to wink at people (all kinds of people). My parents' german friends like to wink at me, at first I thought that person was just fancying me, but it hit me when I realize that I got that a lot (from germans w/ diffrent age and sex). So, why are they lyk that? is it just a gesture to show hospitality or wat?
