Every song out right now is in stereo. You don't check out the sound quality of an mp3 player by stereo effects... it's more about treble, bass and mids. Also, the headphones or speakers you listen on have more to do with the sound quality than the mp3 player. It also depends at what bitrate your mp3 file is. For best quality sound, it should be at 320kbps. Best way to test out sound is by listening to a hip hop song...
Hip hop has firm bass, and the vocals bring out the treble and mids. Testing the sound with a rock or punk song is absolutely useless because first of all, the instruments are recorded live and do not sound as good as hip hip instrumentals, and everything is blended so you can't distinguish between different frequencies easily.
Over all, stereo is the last thing you should be worrying about. Just listen to your favorite songs and see if you like the quality. If not, change the headphones. If your mp3 player has an EQ option, play with that.
And to the person below me...
I didn't say rap music is the best thing to listen to... I'm a recording engineer, and I know for a fact that hip hop music has the best quality instrumentals for testing sound. Now stop trying to act smart and turn this into some stupid genre debate about what genre is better.

Check out anything by Blind Melon. Start off with "No Rain". They have two guitarists. On their first album, one guitar is only on the left channel and the other is only on the right channel. I think it makes an awesome stereo effect!
Also, Jimi Hendrix did a lot of stereo effects. Check out the beginning to "Crosstown Traffic" and you'll see what I mean.
Also, I have to disagree with the guy above me who says it's useless to test it out with rock or punk, because it's all recorded live. That is completely untrue. Both of the songs I listed above were recorded in a recording studio and have good sound quality. If rap has so much better audio quality, why is it that many, many rap artists use the instrumental tracks from rock songs, then rap over the top of it? P Diddy obviously thought the instruments to "Every Breath You Take" (A rock song by the police) sounded good enough when he did "I'll Be Missing You"
Stereotyping the sound quality of a type of music would be just as wrong as if I said, "All rap music is about gang violence". It's just not a well thought out statement.

Pink Floyd-Dark Side of the Moon, whole album is awesome for stereo effects. And my favorite test track for a real stereo workout: Billy Thorpe-Children of the Sun. Stuff flying all over, deep bass, etc-a real good workout for your system!

"frankenstein" by the edgar winters group. it sounds AWESOME! and even if you dont like metallica, listen to their song "through the never" from the black album. it switches from right to left channels throughout the song giving it a really cool effect.
