I first must ask, what has England given us?
The answer:
Irony

Exhibit A: An Englishman derisively asks everyone what the USA has given to the world using the Internet, which was created in the USA.

Go ahead, check out the history of the Internet. Yes, all of its early history takes place in the USA. Sure, there were a few foreigners who helped, but the vast majority of the work was done by Americans.

P.S. Hope your enjoying all of your responses Sid.

Firstly, Carolinatinpan, a salute to your knowledge. Sidney Vicious is a city in Australia, well done.

I think the USA has done a service to millions of people. When support for Islamic fundamentalism was flailing, they galvanised the populations by invading, occupying, and torturing citizens and gave Jihad a breath of fresh Texas air.

We also could not do without their massive companies buying up our smaller corporations and national icons that frankly, just annoyed us. Like Vegemite. and Uggh boots. Thankyou America.

Plus, thank God for their trade agreements. Imagine how utterly crammed the world would be if everyone had access to cheap HIV and malarial drugs. And GM crops make me a healthy shiny happy girl.

I don't want to burst anyones bubble - well actually I do but the US did not give us films, or the light bulb, or the computer or the telephone.

The first movie camera was invented by a Frenchmen - Etienne-Jules Marey and the telephone by a Scotsman - Alexander Graham Bell.

The computer was developed from the abacus but went through many phases and developments by the English from Charles Babbage to Englishman Alan M. Turning who made a machine defined to be capable of computing any calculatable function in 1937.

As for the light bulb, well that too was invented by an englishman Humphry Davy in 1800. This was built upon by Joseph Swan about 30 years later and eventually Edison PATENTED a design that allowed the lightbulb to burn longer.

Democracy was invented by the Greeks but the Americans don't know that as they think history began with the settlement of the US.

Someone asked what the world has given the USA. Hmmn... just a small thing called liberty. You do realise Independence Day on the Fourth of July is a celebration of your freedoms and not just an excuse to take a day off work, eat hot dogs, drink Coca-Cola and watch some fire works? Anyway, France gave you you're freedom. Yes, I know that you falsely believe the Continental Army beat the British but really it was the French in huge numbers and their fleet turning away the Royal Navy off the Chesapeake Capes thus ensuring victory at Yorktown. So you may claim that America saved Europe in World War Two but essentially it was a trade off. France helped America who later on returned the favour.

Edit: What's with the thumbs down? I speak of historical facts. If you don't believe me go read a book for proof. I suggest "The American Revolution" by Gordon Wood as a starting place. Could it be that the thumbs down are because you know I am right and the truth hurts? Viva la France!

NormDeg, have you ever considered that the rest of the world does not want American culture, we have our own and it is considerably older and more proven. Leogirl, Great Britain gave the world computers - look up Station X and Colossus on the internet. As regards to the other American benefits the world has received, the world has had to pay dearly for them in one way or another.

Fat people, and somehow size zero at the same time.
When you say they give the most humanitarian aid- theyre HUGE, of course they would give tons...and they fund that aid through pointless wars.
Not to be biased or anything but like take Scotland, it's *tiny* but we gave the world telephones, the original television, the first cloned mammal, the Kelvin scale of temperature, marmalade, tarmac, microwaves, penicillin, refrigerators, steam engines, whisky, cure for scurvy... and even the US Navy was founded by a Scotsman.
Yeah we rock
Although I will give the USA credit for the light bulb and the *sugar evaporation system*. That was one useful invention, btw.

Cufty is right...the USA has indeed given us law and order. In fact, at any time of the day, there is an episode on somewhere in the world.

The ultimate oxymoron in the term 'Fighting for Freedom'. I love the irony. Also, 'friendly fire', those good old Americans.

What else, erm....fear, spray-on cheese (why?), obesity, too many teen films, packaging, cosmetically enhanced scary looking people, i.e. Cher, that woman who looks like at cat, etc, hmmm...I'm only coming up with bad stuff, I wonder why.
