I guess I am going against the grain. The core 2 duo would be better. The core 2 duo will operate as 2 processors.
Double the computing double the speed.

Not sure about MB

The Pentium D are outdated and is lower FSB than the AMD X2. But Intel cleaned all of that up with the c2d. Core2Duos are some of the greatest processors that the common computer buyer have ever seen.

Clock speeds mean nothing. A 3.8 GHz P4 can be beaten with a 2.4 MHz AMD processor. But Core 2 Duo leaves Both AMD 64 & P4 in the dust.

Being a gamer, u should consider more on investing a proper display rather than an expensive processor. display like the 8800, 1950, etc ... they are killers, and believe me, each one cost more than a mainboard + processor ...

If u're on a budget upgrade, u can look at the AMD X64 with a mid range 800mhz ddr2 board. the X64 are near to the intel's C2D. P4 D are out ...

i find AMD x64 (4200) + gigabyte 61PM board not bad. well, just my 2 cents worth.

oh yah, more comparisons here:

final reminder, when come to gaming, a proper display is more important than the CPU ...

Pentium 4 Dual core 3.4 is better for games and 3d stuff , but if you are getting a laptop , then get the other one , And you cant ( Upgrade ) you will need a whole new case , with power supply and all stuff
Because i you use the old hard disks ( not a SATA ) ones it will be too slow , and you cant use the old power supply it needs a new LGA one , and i recommend Intel motherboards , or ASUS , but intel is way much better , and get a XFX Geforce7 VGA ,, it is great , good luck

in case you have been doing some thing like video-enhancing that makes use of muti-threading you will possibly see the version yet while youre working single threaded video games and surfing the internet you will not see any. opposite to what a large style of human beings think of a 2.4 GHZ middle 2 duo isn't a 4.8 yet extra like a million.2 x 2. The middle 2 duo purely handles 2 threads at a time as against a million making it plenty extra efficient that the biggest single middle cpus.
