The basement in our 100+ year old home has a water problem. We have some seeping coming in between the wall and floor and I've found several options for fixing that issue. We also have some small cracks and and a couple of holes in the middle of the floor. Not drainage holes just places where the concrete came up or cracked. When the water level is above the floor of the basement (almost always) we have water coming in these places. Does anyone know of a do it yourself fix?

we had this problem a few years ago, and sorry to tell you no easy way around it, we had to hire a guy to dig all around the House and he tared the outside walls that were under ground level, and insulated and covered it all with a thick piece of plastic, and covered it all back again. as for the basement floor can get someone to come in and inject some concert to fell in the holes and cracks, and see if that helps, its not going to be cheep but, its not something you want to leave to long, its only going to get worse. If all else false sell.

first you have to fix the water problem... you can do this in many different ways... find the source of the water... assuming it is coming from say the yard when it rains and then running under the home and into the basement.. you can do many things.. like redirect the water... do to home depot and get some plastic pipe with holes in it... asked they will tell you what to get also get the fabric to place on top and around the pipr... then dig a hole around your home place some gravel in the bottom about 2 inch or so then place the pipe in the hole and the fabric around the pipe. place a few connection of solid pipe running out to the road or away from your home.. Down hill if you can... then cover the pipe and wait.. when it rains the water will run toward the home hit the pipe and be redirected to the road.... gutters will also help direct water away from the home.. if this works great you got out cheap.. if not the next thing you may have to do it re-seal the foundatation... which can be a monster project... it involves digging up around the house to get to the foundation... cleaning the dirt off of it... repairing any problems you find.. cleaning it and then "painting" a tar like stuff on it if you want you can also put so tyvek on it placing more pipe to redirect water away from house filling the dirt back in and moving to the next side.... it kinda sucks..

for the holes... I would set up some fans for a few days... after you know you have control over the water.... and dry the basement out really really well. ( if you have cement blocks) you may want to check and see if the blocks are full of water... maybe drill a small hole in the bottom of a few and see if they leak water(remember the blocks have holes so stay near the floor to drill holes).. if so you have to drain those as well....you may even want to spray some watered down bleech on the wood, floors and walls to kill mold... fill the hole with cement...you may even consider pouring another layer ontop of what you already have.... but it is not needed... then I would Seal the cement floor and walls with a water proof sealer..read the directions...

No matter ho will work on the ater problem, it has to be resolved from the outsdie first.

1. look for the more likely source of that water from the surrounding perimeter of the house. there is some means to injust some chemical to at least slow down the source of teh water.

2. Then you may find a solution to the inside ground by doubling the concrete ground and the creation of a dry well .

i dont know of any diy fix for this one. you seem to have a high water table in your area. the only fix i can recommend is to dig down on the outside of the house and install some drains . 100 years old means you probably have a stone foundation. most stone foundations around here have no footer. they dug down until they hit hard pan and started laying the stone. so i think you gotta get lower than the first course of stone with your french drain. once you keep the water on the outside of your basement, patch the floor holes and cracks...patch any stone where mortar is missing

You have to get rid of the water first. You cant just fill the cracks without getting rid of the water. In a basement that old you better get a professional or you may make the problem worse.

you will have to dig out all around the outside of the home and seal the exterior. then concrete should fix the cracks on the floor. big job! good luck. there may be an easier way.
