My school have a constant argument with year 11 pupils who have 'lost' or damaged their balzer and their parents don't want to buy a new one for just a few months. The blazer is a black colour. Should they be allowed black jumpers instead ? Any other suggestions.

Simply inform the school that you are not purchasing a new blazer. Unless your school is fee-paying, I am not at all sure how they can complain. What are they going to do - expel the children so close to exams? Why not carry out a straw poll of parents and see what they think. If too many parents put their foot down with a firm hand, the school will have to back down.

Just make sure the child is dressed smartly without the blazer (then the school lose some of the argument - when children are wearing blazers, the teachers cannot see how short the ties are, nor that the shirts are not tucked in properly!)

And it is nearly Easter. Then the summer uniform comes in and they do not need to wear blazers anyway - and a lot of children do not go in much after Easter because of the upcoming exams.

So I would tell the school to get stuffed, as per my first sentence! Just make it clear it is the parents saying this, not the child.

The schools up in lancashire allow their year 11 pupils to choose a colour by voting and then they wear sweatshirts in that colour instead of Blazers. This has been a mega success and quite a few schools within the area are doing it now. Also it is great that the children have an input into it x

we were constantly having this argument when i was at school, and people who wore blazers were never tucking shirts in etc etc...

we had a sort of student council, one person from each tutor group who had meetings, held per year group, and we discussed what to do about the uniform problem. we had maroon blazers at the time and were so expensive... and uncomfortable. we changed it so that everyone could wear jumpers if they wanted, and year 11 were allowed to wear black jumpers. also in summer we had teeshirts that were printed that pupils could wear, and wear them with a blazer or a jumper.

i think its unacceptable of schools to expect parents to keep forking out for blazers, and if one gets marked or damaged they need to buy another. and if you get the students involved in the decision it looks good on the school and increases morale with the students.

definitely need a change.

I don't like the idea of school uniforms to start with. If they are mandatory, the school system should pay for them. It's only right. By and large, if the school requires blazers, it seems a wise investment to buy one at the beginning of year 9, and one at the beginning of year 11. This avoids one wearing out so close to the end of the last term.

My daughter's school changed from blazers to black sweatshirts, so I think they should be allowed to wear jumpers or even a black fleece.

My daughter's school only makes the blazer compulsory in years 7-9. After that it's optional. Works well.

If no one else at your college is wearing a blazer, then no, i does not placed on a blazer (except you opt to stand out plenty). If different every physique is wearing it although too...and you will pull off the blazer look...then choose for it.
