ok, lets call the two numbers x and y (very original, I know).
x + y = 16
x + 2 +3Y = 18
therefore (doing the same to both sides and minusing the 2 from the second equation)
x + 3Y = 16.
So, 3Y = Y (because added to x they both equal 16).
The only number that divided by 3 (or any other number for that matter) is itself is 0.
Therefore Y = 0
X + 0 = 16 (take 0 away from both sides)
X= 16.
I hope you understood that. Thankyou for asking for the way to solve, not just the answer. For that you get a star.

1)The total of two numbers is 16 - to solve this problem you need to find to numbers that the sum, product or whatever will be 16... example: the total of two numbers is 6. the answer can be 3 + 3=6, or 2 x 3 = 6
2.)The first number plus 2 more than 3 times the second equals 18.
- the first number plus 2 .more than 3 times the second (plus 3 times the second number) will be equals to 18, you need to find the first and second number.

divide up the sentence
in math terminology
'the first number + 2" or x+2
"3 times the second" or 3 x y
sooo the formulae looks like If x+y=16
then ( x+2) + ( 3 x Y) =18
then you have to solve.....
go luck!

i think its pretty well explained..ill just put it into equations for u.... c ther r 2 number x and y...
x + y = 16
first no- x
second number- y
according to the question:
first no + 2 + 3(second no.) = 18
x + 2 + 3y = 18
therefore u have 2 equations:
x + y = 16
x + 2 + 3y = 18....so solve them using substituion method n get the answer...best of luck!!

To get you started:
1st number: A = ?
2nd number: B = ?
1st + (2 + 3*2nd) = 18
A + (2 + 3B) = 18 [#1]
ALSO
A + B = 16
so
A = 16 - B [#2]
"plug" [#2] into [#1]
(16 - B) + (2 + 3B) = 18
SOLVE FOR "B"
"plug into [#2] to solve for "A"

let the 2nd no be x
1st no be y
x+y = 16; => y=16-x;
y+(3x+2)=18;
16-x+3x+2=18;
x=0, y=16
