Prior to the constitution, the US had a different form of government, governed by a document called the Articles of Confederation.
The "President" under the Articles of Confederation was not quite the same as what we think of in today's form of government. The President was the ranking official over the Congress, not the executive/project management type of position it is today.
There were other "Presidents" prior to John Hanson. Some were President prior to the Articles of Confederation being ratified...thus not really making them President I guess. Two others served as President under the Articles prior to Hanson, Samuel Huntington and Thomas McKean. Hanson was the first person to serve a full term.
Samuel Huntington is the correct answer because he served when the United States officially became known as the 'President of the United States in Congress Assembled.'.
On March 1, 1781 the title of the office changed, but Samuel Huntington remained president. Thomas McKean was the first President simply titled “President of the United States” in an official document.

Actually George Washington was not the first president. I forgot who was first. But after the Gov. was formed we had the president of Congress, are was it the president of the Senate? I can't remember. He was for all practical purposes the first president. I just watched this about a yr. ago on the history channell.

George Washington was the first elected under the Constitution and is traditionally regarded as the first overall.
HOWEVER...
Some people like to say it was John Hancock since he was president of the congress when independence was declared.
I say, go with Washington. He was also probably our best.
