Consumer Report picked the Mazda (not Honda) Miata MX-5 as the "Most Fun to Drive" car. Read the rest here to see what Consumer Report has to say:

If I have to pick between soft and hard top convertible? I would pick the hard top, mainly because it affords a little bit more protection (1) from slahers who wish to steal the car or anything inside, and (2) if you get in an accident and your car turns over -- imagine what would happen if it was a soft top. Lastly, soft tops tend to get worn out quicker. Just my 2 cents.
Honda, however, has the S2000. It is more expensive than the Mazda Miata.

The Miata is a Mazda! Not a Honda. The two aren't even close! I'd tell him to get one if he wants to learn how to work on cars or if he is willing to shell out a bunch of money in a few years for repairs.
Good Luck

The MX-5 Miata is not a Honda, it is a Mazda. Mazda is owned by Ford. So it is American, not Japanese.
It's a good car if what you want is style and top-down fun. It is not extremely fast and won't be extremely reliable. It has good ratings from the top car magazines, though, and definetely ranks high in the "fun factor" category.

The miata is really a purist sort of sports car. It's small, light, agile, and doesn't have alot of luxury stuff added on. It's made to be fun to drive. You can toss it around very easily. It won't be a smooth ride, probably not good for long trips either. AS long as that is the sort of car you want... go for it.

miata mx-5 is sure fun to drive car,
it can be a regular car, its got reliability issues,
i'd rather go for a honda s-2000 for more fun more power and more reliability and better build quality.

If your bf is a bigger (height or width) person then he might want to look elsewhere. The miata is very cramped and the pedals are very close together.
