How can I get black stuff from an iron off of a dress shirt?

Iron it again with a piece of stiff brown paper between the iron and the shirt.

This should pick up most of the mark.

Take it to the cleaners. The way to get black stuff off your iron is to get a brown paper bag and lay it on your ironing board. Pour salt on the bag and plug in your iron, run your hot iron over the salt, pressing firmly in small circles. this is a safe, abrasive way to remove the build up.
