I'm not sure what you mean by big covered area is it like a deck or shed. Anyways ferrets have no sweat glands so if it gets to hot outside your ferret will die of heatstroke. If you actually keep it outside in the winter it will die from the cold. Ferrets need to be in a place where the temp is between 60 and 70 degrees. Outside temperatures can change drastically. Also your ferret is in danger of being attacked by wild animals and dogs. If it is on the ground then it will attempt to dig a hole to china since ferrets are burrowers. Ferrets are master escape artists if they can find a tiny hole then they will get out no matter how small it is and they won't stop trying untill they succeed. I know because my original cage for my ferrets had bars that were spaced less than an inch and my ferret got out. I had to cover the cage with chicken wire. He still tried to get out. He finally succeeded by finding a weak point in the wire and biting his way out. I had to buy a new cage. Ferrets need constant supervision because you never know what trouble they can get into. If you are inside and your ferret is outside then it will definetly get into trouble. The bottom line is if you keep your ferret outside it will either run away, hurt itself, or die. I would suggest keeping it inside. If you play with your ferret outside it will have to be on a leash(they can escape them easily) or in a ferret play pen because if you just let your ferret run around on it's own it will get itself into a lot of trouble or it could run off find a hole and decide it wants to live their. I really suggest keeping your ferret indoors, I know that ferrets live in the wild, but wild ferrets aren't kept in cages and they burrow underground so that they don't get too hot or cold. It's still your decision, but I hope this helps you make a better choice.

It really depends on where you live and what the living arrangement for the ferret is. As long as they have access to plenty of bedding - blankets, old clothes, etc. - they should be plenty warm in mildly cool weather. In the summer, as long as temps do not reach 80 or higher, your ferret should do fine in a raised hutch. When temps begin to get that high, even in shade, your ferret will have heat stroke and die horribly. They need to be kept cool. I mentioned a raised hutch - dogs will savage a ferret. Make sure the enclosure is strong and cannot be torn or broken into. Keep food and water available 24/7, keep the cage and bedding clean, and give your ferret playtime inside with you several hours every day and you will have a happy ferret.

In the summer you probably could, like if it was in a hutch or something. Just as long as there are no fierce animals around to hurt the ferret.
In the wintertime, no way. You absolutely cannot keep your ferret outside! You probably already knew that....oh, well lol

only if you live in a area that is warm year around but keep in mind they tunnel and will dig right out of your yard. you most build the cage so tha this does not happen and you must also make sure that other animalscan't get to ferret, they will kill it.

Uh... yeah. We're do you think ferrets come from? It probably doesn't like being inside anyway.

Definitely in the summer although as long as not a bad winter my neighbours always keep theirs outside with plenty of warm bedding, lovely creatures aren't they :)

As long as the temps are over 60 degrees even at night, it is no problem. Just make sure you watch for shivering (too cold) or if they feel too warm. If they feel hot, you can throw a frozen water bottle in by them for them to lay on and get cooler.
