Like a gangster.
The mob was THE most glamours thing in Hollywood back then. Plus it'll be fun for him.
Is you hair straight? If it is I'd suggest getting some really uniform straight waves in it. Remember they all had it really plastered to the heads around that time as the hair products we're really rubbish. So try to keep it simple. Just something easy with a hot iron or tongs, as that's all they had.

You: a dress with a fitted bodice and a swing skirt, with flat ballet shoes or sexy heels. Your hair should go up in a French roll, which was still very popular back then. Use a plain ribbon as a headband. You can wear a petticoat underneath a skirt to give it that fullness.
Him: Long trousers, waistcoat, tie if it's evening, polished flat shoes, and slicked back hair.
Link below has articles on the era, with some templates and tips.

Glamour in the 50's was beehive hairdos, garter belts, nylons with seams up the back, dresses with a fitted bodice and full skirt (length to the knee or below!). For men...dress like Elvis! Hair slicked back, flashy suit coat, flashy two-tone shoes.
Have fun!

You could go as the obvious film star - abit predictable though, or what about in the style of '50's teenagers - capri pants, gingham shirt tied in a knot at the waist, flat pumps (bobby sox) and your hair wavy and make up kind of understated with definition to the lips and the eyes with eyeliner and lashes. And for you (just kidding!!!!) your boyfriend could go as James Dean inspired get-up - Harrington type jacket or white t-shirt, Levi's, slicked back hair, and a whole lot of attitude.
