Usually animals can predict some catastrophes of nature now we have seismographic technology that something is about to happen Mr E=mc3 is Good explanation too..

Tsunamis can be started by an earthquake, like the last major tsunami that hit a few years back. Also they have found that a tsunami can be caused by a landslide, they discovered that a tsunami hit a remote location many years ago that was massive, it was caused by a landslide. I honestly forget how large the wave was, but I believe it was near the 100 ft tall mark.
On a different topic: Rogue waves have been known to grow to massive sizes, 100 ft tall in some cases and come out of nowhere. There is no warning for these waves and can cause a ship to sink in one hit. The rogue wave was the cause of the ship sinking in the recent movie Poseidan (not sure if that is spelled right).
Other POSSIBLE causes can be from impacts in the ocean, it would have to be a large impact though and we would hopefully see an asteroid or other object of that size comming.
As for warnings, we do not have any methods of predicting them accurately at the moment. We do have sensors off shore that can tell us when and where one is, but often there is only minutes to warn people. Just not enough time to help much.

It usually starts because of an undersea earthquake. In the Pacific, the plates shift (earthquake) and the displacement of the crust causes a wave. This wave travels at incredible speed and as it rises along the floor of the ocean, it stays the same height and emerges from the ocean. This is the giant tsunami wave that you see.
Another possibility for a tsunami happened during acient times, when a volcano erupted and the landslide entered the ocean. The speed of the landslide and the amount of earth that entered the water caused a tsunami. It is this occurence that is often used to scientifically explain the miracles Moses created to escape Egypt. The raining of the frogs, the parting of the Red Sea, the blocking of the Sun, etc.

Undersea earthquakes that change in the earth's sea floor shape. They push the sea floor up and that pushes the water forward at massive speeds but in deep oceans it is perceived as barely a ripple. When it reaches shallow water the massive wall of water rises up above the normal water level and WHAM!! You get the results of the one that hit Banda Ache, Indonesia in December 2004.
Scientists have devised devices that measure ocean currents and detect Tsunamis in the Pacific and Indian Oceans as well as sensitive equipment around the world detects earthquakes that can cause a tsunami - usually incorrectly called a Tidal Wave which is a different thing again. With the aid of these devices measuring the pressure along the tectonic plates and the ones at sea, scientists can give early warnings but as yet it is impossible to predict where or when one will occur or how bad it will be.
We are only men, we do not have Crystal balls. The best they can do is watch and evaluate the data received to postulate where one might occur but when??? That's anyone's guess. If we could predict what nature will do and where and when we could solve many problems. Unfortunately Mother Nature is a secretive old girl and rarely tells us anything that she is going to do.

Simlple answer :
A tsunami is causes by an earth quake in the ocean.
This causes a massive displacement of water and creates a wave that travels at incredible speeds.
Once these waves near a landmass , the coastal waters pull back fiercely and the wave floods the land causing major destruction. Prediction needs to be done very quickly with something called the richter scale that measures seismic activity. And evacuation should also be done quickly.
