Well for schooling I think one just needs to pay attention, if you do the rest is fine, as well as feeling free to ask questions. I had friends who did terribly in school by comparison and I think that that's why.
For work, there people for whom things fall into place based on personality, so while it looks like they're not trying hard they really are, by asserting themselves and such. I guess maybe it seems effortless because they don't complain as much, I'm not sure.
There are people though who get success with little effort, and who are idiots, the problem is it can't be sustained. They just dump money into things thoughtlessly and end up with failure. Take someone popular like Paris Hilton for instance. She's had like 10 different jobs or businesses in the past however many years, yet how many are really still relevant and likely to pull in money for her? I doubt it's many if any. Plus she has to spend loads of cash to get publicity, if she didn't have money she'd've failed long ago, as will others who do things that way.
So I guess there's little effort, which gives little payoff. Then there's perceived little efforts, which just seem that way to the outsider.

I always breezed through school getting straight A's and I barely ever did homework and never studied for tests.

Some people have all the luck in the world. Most of us don't though.
