I once heard that MOUSE is an acronym, and is short for Manually-Operated User-Selection Equipment. Doesn't everyone know that?? :-)
But I think everyone who said it looks like a mouse with it's long "tail" is probably correct. Down here in Texas we just call 'em little critters.

The mouse first became a widely-used computer tool when Apple Computer made it a standard part of the Apple Macintosh. Today, the mouse is an integral part of the graphical user interface (GUI) of any personal computer. The mouse apparently got its name by being about the same size and color as a toy mouse.
in my opinion, the name of the device would change over the time; since computer mouses got various colors and they are even wireless.. probly theyd would rename it to "mouse without tail" or "mouse got sprayed" or somethin..

It's because the wire that connects the mouse to the computer looks like a mouse tail, thus called the mouse.

Because most are shaped rather similar to a mouse and overall about the same size as a mouse. Also, unless you have a cordless mouse, they have that cute little tail.
