The orchestra era is dying out and so are the people who created it. There are still a lot of "hold outs" but they are becoming fewer every day. One cause is the availability of new sound systems that make it "like being there". People can sit back in their favorite chair and not have to hassle with getting dressed up and go out to a concert. I personally love a good symphony orchestra, but have neither the time or money to attend them regularly. I love all (most) music but one of my favorites has always been classical, and I'm not that old. Many young people appreciate classial music, but times change and people change with them.

Well I think truthfully, that the loss of interest in Symphonic music is due to the laziness and stupidity of the growing public! Really, most people do not appreciate classical music. It is sad that the orchestras are losing business, but maybe they can learn to change with the times, evolve like. Maybe, I am guessing you are in an orchestra, you can start a band where there is someone singing along with the symphony! I would probably listen to it.

Because people are ignorant and have the attention span of a gnat these days. It's really sad that music...real music played by actual musicians (gee imagine that!) is virtually ignored by the masses weaned on rubbish TV shows and celebrity nonsense. It all comes down to the lowest common denominator. What is the cheapest to produce and the easiest to sell to stupid people. Some of the UTTER CRAP that is out there today that people are dumb enough to think is good makes me sick. I love all kinds of MUSIC from Heavy Metal all the way through to Classical because unlike your average consumer these days I consider my self a MUSIC fan not someone who is only interested in who has the most hits and the biggest mansion and the the most abhorrent behavior in public.
I mean look at some of the monosyllabic, uninformed, dumb answers here "It's 2007 time to move on" Wha...? "I would rather get my legs waxed..." WTF??
Modern "culture" is a very sad state of affairs but those of who understand and realize that it doesn't matter because it is all just a bunch of fads that will die out one day anyway can take the quality things we truly enjoy for their creativity and inspiration and leave the posers and fad kids to their nonsense.

if you listen to the truly talented musicians of today they love to have classical music accompany them. i am noticing more and more heavy metal bands doing whatever they can to keep symphony music alive. i believe it is because truly well written heavy metal is not that far off from orchestral music. the songs are composed as opposed to simply written. many of the bands that are into black metal and death metal use old symphonic music and simply change re write it with guitars and basses and drums then add lyrics to it. the youth of today and the music they listen to has no real substance and in many cases no true talent behind it. lyricists have no training, and the other so called musicians know three chords if you are lucky. they couldnt tell you anything about time signatures or composition. it is a sad trend in music i agree. one of my favorite radio stations to listen to in my town is the classical station. and most of the people i know who listen to a lot of heavy metal love the station as well. also every one i know who listens to a lot of different types of music not just one type in particular listen to classical. it gives you a appreciation of where everything else came from and without the history of music how will we know where to take it in the future.

Lack of attention span on the part of the audience. Lack of focus on one "star". An orchestra leader (conductor) has his back turned on the audience.

duh cause orchestra SUCKS and the people like the bands better. I'm saying they have bands in the parades and that means that people like them better. plus there is way more people in band and most of band people don't like the orchestra. plus the bands keep the listener more interested with the music by changing the tempo one part my be allegro and the other will be crescendo.and the orchestra is the same through the whole song.
