You should have given some more details to get a better answer.

Things like
1. How much you are willing to spend for the laptop?
2. What will you be using your Laptop for?
3. You want performance or Mobility?

If its for general browsing and movies you can get decent Laptops from all top brands for around 500-600 USD.

If you want to go for Ultra Portable or Ultra Peformance onces you can spend anything between 1000USD-1500 USD.

I am using a Sony VAIO SZ 18 G/P for the last 6 months and i found it very good. But its on the higher price side but giving portabiolity and performance.

You can go with brands like Sony, ASUS if you want a Hi End one and with brands like HP, Compaq, Acer if you plan to buy a lower end one.

Still need help on selecting a particular model you can always get back to me.

Sony. Sony laptops are a good value (worth the bucks), and I like their sleek style. They are a little more expensive than Toshiba, and their (Sony) non-live tech support is better.

Stay away from Gateway & Compaq. Junk, in my opinion.

HP's seem to be bulkier than Sony & Toshiba. They have a slightly higher profit margin, so dealers push them.

Dell is more expensive than you need to pay, and they will try very hard to get you to upgrade, upgrade, upgrade.

Virtually all new laptops have both a modem and a 10/100 cable jack, + built-in wireless. Look for wireless-G (most have this).

If you want it to last a while, don't skrimp on price or features. You should wait until they go on sale (about every 2-3 weeks)and will need to pay between $1100. and $1300. Avoid the latest/greatest, as the price will drop rapidly on those. But get something with 2 gigs of RAM and a Intel duo 2 with a speed approaching 2 ghz. All of them use Vista, which I removed and replaced with XP. Vista will become the standard, but right now it's a pain in the neck.

Purchase at Circuit City or Best Buy. The extended warranty is expensive, and it is a very high-profit item for them. They will not replace a laptop over-the-counter.

Costco has the most liberal return policy, but their selection is severely limited. Circuit City salespersons do not work on commission.

go to newegg.com and sort by price. i like sony's personally. just read the buyer reviews. and the wireless is either built in or you have to buy a relatively inexpensive wireless card.
