Well, that's not an easy answer.
There are, first of all, different kinds of religions; some are more accepting of other views and some are less.
The least accommodating to other viewpoints are the monotheistic religions.
There are people who must make others wrong in order to feel right, themselves. Such people tend to gravitate towards religions that support and reward that viewpoint.
Most of this has to do with the way they are raised...but there are, IMO, some people who simply are that way.
But all of it, religious conflict, nationalism, imperialism, and so on, come down to one thing at their base:
"We're us, and you're not, so we're better than you"
Pretty sad, isn't it?
