Depends on your needs, I personally use a Tablet PC for college because it is a lot neater than all my notebooks and notepads... plus I have an excuse to have my pc out in class... its good to take notes on. I have a HP TC4200 tablet pc, they aren't in the market anymore but I got mine on eBay... There are some sweet deals there. Mine has 2GB RAM which is what you should aim for, since all the software coming out is pretty memory hungry. You should go for a machine with a DVD Burner (mine doesn't have one but I bout an external one with a slim form factor so it is very awesome) remember the idea of a laptop in college is not having extra weight, so something lightweight is a must, my tablet only weighs 4.6lbs and measures 12.1" screen so it is TINY, and the battery lasts 5.5 hours, which is awesome for those classes without outlets.... Oh, and a long warranty is a must, colleges are crazy (mine has a 3year warranty and I called about an error I was getting and they served me fast, appratenly they thought my hard drive was messed up so they sent me another HDD, even though it was just tht I installed somethin n screwed up registry files that I fixed myself... but hey! I got an extra HDD!) ........you can contact me if anything, I bought my tablet off a dude on eBay who gave me a great price...I tried configuring it at the HP site while they still sold them and mine was valued at 3,330...which almost made me gag...LOL, but I got it on eBay for 900....
Hope this helps!

I got my Toshiba Satellite on sale at Best Buy, also got a huge rebate. If you wanna a good quality PC then you need to be willing to take a little time to look for sales and rebate offers. I love this computer, it's been good to me and it was totally worth what I paid. I highly recomment Toshiba because I use a lot of their products. However surprisingly I do not recommend Dell, too many issus that I had encountered make me less supportive of their laptops. But Gateway, Toshiba and most HP's are great. Good luck.

refer to the faculty and notice what they propose. they oftentimes have policies and proposals for college scholars and might inform you if a Mac will artwork properly with the campus community. in case you have already desperate on a substantial, additionally verify with the dep. and notice what they say. in case you would be going into layout or artwork, a Mac will probable be ok whether the college itself won't help it. while you're finding at corporation or Engineering, that is probable not the final selection.

A general price range would help....but lets just say if your not using it to play games, almost anything off the shelf will work.... since your using it for college, get a new one so you have a warranty....
Shop around locally, most websites like best buy or comp usa have a place for you to view the weekly sales ad, I got my laptop for $400 off its price last year at best buy, total cost $350.....It was a year old model they were trying to get rid of......but, im also not rich.....lol
Heres a link for comp usa's sales ad

At the top you will see the button for weekly ad

Look for some good deals. Even higher names like Dell offer great discounts, especially just for students.

dells, gateways, hps, compaqs are crap. its like buying a kia. go to newegg.com or pricewatch.com....pricewatch is a little tricky to understand at first.
and btw, bestbuy is a ripoff for computers. their tv prices are great. computers are one of the places they get most of their profit from. example. i bought a 160gb hard drive for 100 at bestbuy, i found it on newegg for 60. and i've seen a few computers from bestbuy at newegg minus a couple of hundred bucks.
