It got nothing to do with points:
You become a top contributor by showing you are knowledgeable in a particular subject. This can be for:

Posting content which receives high number of thumbs up
Constant Best Answers in the subject
Yahoo Staff evaluate your content and like what they see

Points and level are nothing to do with it.

I heard that you need 100 best answers within a particular subject to become a top contributor.

I don't know I have almost 8,000 and I'm not a top contributor. Go check the list and see where you are.
