Seriously, what is the difference between a face-to-face argument and an argument on the internet??

You know sometimes you can actually have a great discussion and disagreement on the Internet, but not very often. Here are a number of reasons,
You Don't Know Me (dissociative anonymity)
You Can't See Me (invisibility)
See You Later (asynchronicity)
It's All in My Head (solipsistic introjection)
It's Just a Game (dissociative imagination)
We're Equals (minimizing authority))

Much like an Internet dating room, people assume identities during an argument online that are not close to their real selves. That's were the "we're equals" piece above comes in. Secondly there is absolutely no accountability so people can make any kind of claims they want without having to back up their opinions with facts, statistics, etc. that they might have to in a classroom or other kind of formal setting. This is how flame wars start, as people end up making "ad hominum" attacks, which means against the other person directly as opposed to attacking their actual argument.

LOL, hahahahahahahaha
I don't know what makes me laugh at that statement, but for some reason, it's funny to me.
Even if you win, your're still retarded. LOL hahahahahahahaha.
I gotta tell my brother about this one.
The part that you fail to realize, is that even tho it's special olympics, 'SOMEONE WON.
That individual, no matter what the level of retardation, is STILL A WINNER.
Nothing can replace the feeling(s) that one gets from winning any kind of competition, including an argument, when one faces his opponent.
In a face to face argument other than words, other variables come into play. e.g. body language; facial expressions; environment; other individuals; etc.
Also, it could possibly escalate to a physical altercation as well.
On the internet, it's all wit and it's easy to 'walk away from'.
You can make yourself have the last word and make yourself the winner whether you truly did or not.

Arguing period is pretty much a waste of time and energy. A discussion, is a different manner.

Arguing online tends to be even more futile because folks online will more often argue just for the sake of arguing, than face-to-face folks will. People will say things online they would never say to someone's face, because they are protected behind their computer screen and the anonymity gives them a sense fearlessnes. You'll find a lot more argumentative bullies online than you ever will offline.

yes and no...

yes, because arguing is pointless if it is just in words and can never be put forth correctly because of semantic problems... you can never get into a better discussion if the other person does not wish to see what is on your mind. kinda like living in their own world and it is right... retarded ryt? (to think of a better term...)

no, because arguing is when you want you idea or opinion heard and appreciated... so when you do... there might be someone who will listen and understand you... you might find that person and reach an understanding that could be mutual for the two or more arguing... It is not about winning, but understanding...

I hope I helped... ;-)

The difference is on the internet, a little smart-*** punk can talk like a big hard-*** and say things to a person, like they're realy brave. At the same time a big hard-*** can't rely on is intimidation factor and will have to use his brain and wit to fight, or get his point across.

lol its funny and true. on the internet you cant see the person or hear there voice or tone or expression. its alot different and things can get to carried away on the internet where they wouldnt be 1/2 as bad as in real life.

I dont agree with the quote.
I discuss topics on the internet because i seek to put forth truth, rather than the filtered pap that passes for network news and organized religion.

take this website for instance:

these folks who produce this website are the most honest and decent folks I've ever met. without being able to post their site on here, many folks would never hear of them.
