If disagreements are serious, or ongoing, or deeply rooted it is helpful to have a mediator involved. Someone who is trusted and respected by both sides, who can meet separately with both sides and sort things out and provide insights and suggestions.
I've seen several instances where this has solved an escalating conflict quickly and happily for both sides. In some cases it can be done without having the two sides actually face to face and that eases the tension and stress level if there's a history of problems.
It would be nice if we could all be adult and professional but neither age nor education insures this. If people cannot openly and honestly communicate directly, a mediator is a positive way to try to overcome the limitations and behavior of the individuals who are involved.
I wish I knew less about this. I can tell you from experience that some workplaces are healthier than others in this respect. If it is really toxic and shows no sign of improving, better to get out than get beaten down by negative interactions.
