Can a sport, such as basketball, be considered an art? This is a pholosopical quesition that I to answer. I just want to know how you felt about it and any examples that you might have.

Consider that an art has to have certain qualities such as:
1. Quality of work
2. Response of the audience
3. Intent of the artist

This are not the only qualities you can consider...

The simplest and best definition of art I've encountered is one given by Da Vinci - "Art happens when the spirit of God meets the arm of man." I'll take this def. a step further and say this is when high art happens, and an artists' goal, whether he/she realizes it, is the attainment of this ideal. What this means in practical terms is that art, at its best, reaches a point of transcendence where the ordinary becomes the extraordinary, where even the really good becomes the sublime. It's the point in a game when you say to yourself "I can't believe what I'm seeing", or "I can't believe what I just saw". I don't need to bring up specific examples because, I'm sure, numerous examples will live in your heart forever.

Dude, I've seen a guy pee on a crucifix and call it art. I've seen a guy fill a room with dirt and call it art. To be honest, the world of modern art has tried so hard to push and expand the boundaries of art so far, that EVERYTHING is now art. I find it sad that so many would rather ask push the boundaries of what art is rather than try their best to make GOOD art that moves people, instead of confusing them.

Basketball definitely has an aesthetic, a communal experience, a pace, a movement and shows a great amount of expression by everyone involved. The artists intend it to be exciting. It can be performed at a very high level, elevates emotion and is truly beautiful.

If you can call a cross filled with urine art, then I believe basketball would also qualify. Though to be honest, I'd rather not think about it and just enjoy the moment whether it be watching the NCAA tourney or checking out a Picasso.

of course its an art form. look how graceful a player looks when he leap to dunk or lay the ball up. look at the motion of the arms and upperbody as a player takes a shot from the 3 point line.

quality of work - the players put in the practise and the hours to refine their skills and abilities. not always a shot will go in, but most of the time the players perform them the proper way...so the fundamentals of the individual look good....just the shot may not.

response of the audience - is there any louder cheer when a player hits a game winning jump shot? or a strong dunk over his opponents? the audience responds with its roars of approval. and also its boo's when the players or team are not showcasing the art form at a high level

take crossovers for example . not everyone can do them .and many who can do them off court can't use them in the correct places on court.
About responce of the audience . there are bets worth millions . almost every time there is a popular team the seats are sold out. and look at the number of questions on basketball . the last time i checked there were 800 . thats alot.
i just luv basketball . i could recignise the bounce of a basketball from a mile away.
