My computer has 4 memory slots with 2gb ddr2 factory installed . 1gb each in slots 1 and 3. Now I'm adding 1gb in 2 pieces of 512 should i drop a 512 in slots 2 and 4 or move my 1gb to slots 1 and 2 leaving 3 and 4 with 512 each. i want the most efficient operation

PC RAM is normally best installed in matched pairs. Given that the RAM is in slots you stated I would just use the empty slots and boot it up. Failing that you need to look in the manual about the slot configuration for your specific PC. Adding new memory to a PC is OK most mistakes is where people buy memory of a different speed to that which is already installed. In most case this still works but it can throw up strange things. Don't forget to alter you Virtual Memory size if you are adding more RAM. This is important if you need to read the dump logs if the system reports a problem. You get to Virtual Memory by right clicking my computer - select properties, then the advanced tab and select settings button in the performance section. In the performance window select the advanced tab and click on the "change" button - the rest is easy to see. I recommend selecting "System managed Size" and let windows do its thing. I would put the 1gb in slots 1-2 and 512mb in 3-4. IMO

depends on the pc manufacturer. if your current config is as you state then when you add the additional (matched pair) of 512 then those will go in slots 3 and 4. funky engineers do that sometimes for some reason

What model pc do you have, its on the back of the pc.
If its a home build, what model of motherboard do you have....

This can only be answered by looking at the specs for the board......
