It depends a little on what we had instead. My first instinct is to assume we'd have fixated on some other configuration of qualities to distinguish individuals. This might have led to a different manner of dress, or some weird-seeming social rituals, but probably wouldn't change society as much as you'd think.

On the other hand, if we were truly incapable of identifying each other as individuals, I think "society" would have stalled at the level of bees. We could still work collectively to perform survival tasks, but that would be about it. It seems likely that as a practical matter, we would probably take up ceremonial tattooing or some other mechanism of identity creation...leading us to a system where everyone would have a "face" of their own making.

Interesting question! I wish my answer could do it justice.

The closest I can think of is an internet chat room. You can learn a lot about a person just from his or her writing - personality, education, point of view, etc.

Then again, even on Yahoo Answers we have avatars.

I think it's true - a picture IS worth a thousand words! Visual cues, and a face, are indeed extremely important.

if we were living the truth we would not need society.society is a facade.the real world is the spiritual ream, this is all a put on by mans ideology and look what man has done.screwed up everything.the earth, love compassion, caring, and man just let it happen instead of fighting against hate with love man fought hate with hate and the world is falling apart as we speak and most people still cant see it.
