Just to turn the starter and run acessories when the engine is off.
In fact if you ever need to jump start a car and you don't have cables you can very easily but another vehicle battery in your start the car and then disconnect the battery and remove it so you can put it back inthe other vehicle

The main purpose of a battery and the only reason a battery is necessary for a car to run, is to provide power to the car's starter, so the car does not have to be cranked or pushed to get it started. Once the engine is running, a battery is not required.
