For all cultures, religion has been a way of creating order before an official set of laws were introduced.
Religion created a moral basis within its followers for what was right and wrong. As religion has been so ingrained into most almost every society since homo-sapiens could communicate, It is only natural for aspects of the nation such as culture and politics to be heavily influenced by such philosophies.

The answer could fill a book. However try this one liner: Religion and politics are inseparable (even if it is 'no religion') tools that shape society and culture of the regions where they originate and spread.
