What is the history behind the invention of the hampster wheel? Did someone really think that hampsters needed to work out? What about pet birds? Where is their exercise equipment?

How could you invent equipment to help birds exercise? What would that even look like?

Oh, I forgot about the ladders. Still though, they don't use them too often.

My guess is that the wheel was invented when someone had a hamster and didn't have alot of room. They needed an exercise machine to let the hamster run wihtout ocupying lots of space. The hamster wheel is an ingenious design, takes up minimal space and allows for endless running. However, they need to work on that squeak in the system. Interesting question.

I think someone invented the hamster wheel because he probably had hamsters and the darn things kept running around like little maniacs. Because that's what they do! They like to run. So he had to have a very big cage, which left absolutely no room for his own furniture. So maybe he built a wheel for them to run in, so he could keep them in a smaller cage, the hamsters could still run, and he still had some room in the house to put furniture in.

There are items that are used for birds to get exercise. Parrots use specifically designed toys that they climb on and chew on. These toys help to maintain the skills that are inherent to the specific species. Letting the bird get some flight time in also is considered exercise. It helps to maintain muscle and acts as a cardio workout.

hamsters and birds need to excersize just like people... the hamster wheel is great for a hamster.. as for birds, they should be let out of thier cage to excersize at least three times a week.

It would have the appearance of a "hammock" where as the bird would lie on its breast and flap its wings uncontrollably for exercise!
The hamster wheel, UHMMMMMMMMMMMMMM???? Why not a "tread mill"???
