It isn't a matter of not knowing, it's a matter of NOT caring.

There was a touch of moderate liberalism that flowed through the Founding Fathers (mainly in the form of Thom Jefferson), but most were conservative by todays standards. If you read the Declaration of Indepence, the Constititution, and the Federalist Papers, you will recognize a more republican stance....that of a republic, not a democracy.

The Good Fathers were basing this country on the rule of law, not the rule of people. There is an enormous difference. The laws that govern this land were predicated on the Bible's Ten Commandments, not the 'consensus' of the masses.

The modern liberals, or social democrats know this. Social democrats? Yes, if you research far enough (start with wikipedia and go from there) you'll see how the modern left has had an ongoing love affair with the socialist and communist parties. Every usurping of powers, every subversion of NATURAL rights, every step away from common sense leads them closer to the ultimate goal: absolute power.

In effect, bigger government means more power to them, and less for us. If enough people continue to rely on large federal programs and do not do for themselves (whenever possible), then liberals are ASSURED continued successful tenureship within the system (see Ted Kennedy).

On a personal note, I was a liberal for many years until I began reading the aforementioned documents. I then realized that modern principles of liberalism are aligned with socialism and not God, the guiding force as defined by the Good Fathers. Once you realize that there is no such thing as the separation of church and state ANYWHERE in the Constitution, everything changes.

If you allow children the 'right' to do whatever they want, while continuing to provide all necessities (with little to no education)....how could you possibly expect these children to reach autonomous adulthood? You can't.

For all your ills, replace God with government--that is liberalism.

We know about the usurping powers of the government. We watch the "Executive" Branch do it everyday. I also watch conservatives justify the stripping of civil rights and state rights by justifying it under the guise of national security. There are smart people and idiots in every party. No party has a monopoly on general knowledge and to think so is arrogant to the point of a character flaw. Besides...for conservatives selecting George W (a C student at best) as your leader is nothing boast about...he was absent during the "BILL of RIGHTS" portion of his political science class.

Its not that they dont know. They dont care.Politics is a dog and pony show.Republicans and democrats alike could care less about this country. As long as we keep lining there pockets. They are happy.
One day people in this country will wake up and realize current government is inept,to handle things here.
That is obvious.Just look at the mess we are in right now as I am typing this.
Go Libratarians. That is all I can say.If you want a government that works.Stay away from republicans and democrats.

Nice try. Bush tried an executive power grab unparalleled in the history of the United States. He has used "War Powers" to claim all kinds of privleges and powers never before claimed by any president. And of course his "War on Terror" is open-ended, much like a War on Drugs or the War on Poverty, so his powers (in his feeble mind) are perpetual. The GOP in Congress failed to challenge his bizarre claims, but now that the Dems are back in control, they are restoring order to the system.

First, what the hell are you talking about! Be a little more specific. Second, the Republicans have forgotten that our government is a success because of the checks and balances built into the constitution. When a President oversteps his abilities then it is up to congress and the courts to investigate and resolve the problem. That is why Nixon had to resign and why Bush has to answer for his actions. His people may serve at the will of the President but the President serves at the will of the people!

From the news these days it's not the liberals that don't know the laws or how government is supposed to function. The current government spends most of it's time in high court over constitutional matters.

Because they are to buisy being selfish .... having sex with with multiple people.. and people of the same sex, getting pregnant so they can abort thier child and have sex with a strange man to do it again..To buisy being cosumed by immorality that the basic soncept of rules life and laws are far lost and beind them, If they cared just one ounce about basic life and laws as they do about minorities and womans rights then they might actually be decent people. They are so uneducated and self centered that they think we should do away with what our founding fathers fought so hard to give us!

It seems the President, whatever party, thinks he is king, emperor, whatever and the other branches are irrelevant. There are exceptions (Carter comes to mind) but Bush is worse than any. His signing statements, attempts to stuff the court with toadies (can you say "Harriet Myers?") etc show a complete disdain for the other branches.

PLUS he's run roughshod over the constitution. He's trashed at least half of the bill of rights in the name of "fighting terrorism" AKA "I can do whatever the *(#$ I please".

Liberals share a belief in individual rights, free enterprise, representative democracy, and the rule of law. In this sense, almost all Americans accept liberal ideals, so much so that it is easy to forget how revolutionary these ideals were when the American Constitution was written. Jefferson said "peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none." All of our founding fathers considered liberalism a foundation of “the grand experiment”, America. In our era, liberalism has been derided to appear weak and elitist, and, our military is used to enter entangling alliances with some. Think liberal, think BIG!

It is every citizens job to know their rights under the U.S. Constitution and The Bill of Rights that are being eroded everyday! It is our job to correct them, regardless of party affiliations, since they are the servants! All of them seem to forget that fact.
