Answer
A group of horses are generally called a herd. Herds are led by an alpha mare or lead stallion. Even a domesticated group of horses are called a herd. Herds also have apecking order in which the horses follow. If you watch them, one horse may eat all of the hay and not allow another horse in its way. This is usually the lead horse.

Herd usually. Also band or remuda.Groups of race horses are called strings sometimes.
In the wild a herd would consist of a stallion,a group of mares(of any number from 2 up to 9 or 10 but all usually related to each other)and their foals. There would also be bachelor herds of stallions too young or too old to fight for 'ownership' of a breeding herd.
