In most states, it is a legal requirement to keep applications for one year (in the event that there is a discrimination claim the company will need that info.)

I suspect your real question is, "do companies pull applications from their files when they have openings, or must you re-apply to receive consideration for employment?" If that's really the question, the answer is that it varies by company. Some firms have a more sophisticated database that they use for recruitment, while others rely on paper applications. If in doubt, call them and ask how long they hold applications for active consideration, or simply reapply every 3 months or so.

when i was manager of several fast food restaurants we kept them on file at the store for three months then we sent them to the main headquarters and they would keep them on hand in a box in a warehouse for one year. Been my experience if you want a job apply often and frequently and keep calling to check on your applications

most stores get rid of them after 6 months but a lot of places think that after 3 months you would already have a job so they just go to a more recent one. so i would just keep reapplying and if they see that your name keeps coming up they will notice that you really want to work there so you would have a more likely hood of getting the job.
