a +b = 11
a = 11- b

substitute

11-b-b=111
solve

-b-b =100
-2b=100
b = -50
so
a = 11-(-50)
a = 61 and b = -50

Are you surprised ? Make it a simple question as
If a+ b = 11 and a – b = 111 find the values of a and b
a + b = 11 -------------eq. 1
a – b = 111 -----------eq. 2
Adding equations 1 & 2
2 a = 122
a= 122/2 = 61
Pur this value of a in eq. 1
61 + b = 11
b = 11 – 61 = – 50

1) a+b =11
2) a-b=111
» 1)+2) »» 2a=122 »»» a=122/2 =61
back in 1) a+b = 11 » 61+b= 11 »» b = 11-61 = -50
a=61; b=-50

a+b=11............(1)

a-b=111..........(2)
adding (1) and (2) we get 2a= 122
a=61
substitute the value of a in (1) we get
61+b=11
b=11-61
b=-50
therefore the numbers are a=61 and b=-50

a+b=11....(1)
a-b=111....(2)

as per (1)
a=11-b
substitute a value in (2)
11-b-b=111
11-2b=111
-2b=111-11
-2b=100
b=100/-2

b=-50

sustitute b value in (1)

a+(-50)=11
a=11+50
a=61

Answer is
a= 61
b= -50

2007-03-21 10:15:11 · answer #5 · answered by M S B 2 · 0 0

a+b=11
a-b=111 (b will get eliminated)
This becomes

a+a=11+111
2a=122
a=122/2
a=61
a+b=11
but a =61
therefore
b=11-61
b=-50

VERIFICATION:-
a+b=11
61-50=11
11=11

2)a-b=111
61-(-50)=111
61+50=111
111=111

(a,b)=(61,-50)

A=61,B=-50
Solution:

a+b=11;a-b=111
so adding both eqn we get:
2a=122=>a=122/2=61
Similarly we get
2b=-100=>b=-50.Ans

One of the numbers MUST be negative.

You can add or subtract entire equations:

if you add the two equations, you will get:

a - b = 111
a + b = 11
-------------
2a = 122
a = 61

If you subtract the two equations, you will get:

a - b = 111
a + b = 11
--------------
-2b = 100
b = -50

Therefore,
a = 61
b = -50

Just add the two equations together...

a + b = 11
a - b = 111
---------------
2a + 0b = 122

→ 2a = 122

I think you can go on from here...
