I am not allowed to sign passport applications etc because I am not a proffessional and therefor cannot be trusted, so how is it I can be called to serve on a jury and judge another man wheather he is guilty or not. Surely God said judge not.

I don't think it is about doubtful character. I reckon it is that you are risking your whole professional life if you give false information and therefore you have more to lose if you get caught lying.

On another note I had to get a new passport recently and I hadn't been living in England for 6 years. I hadn't been to the doctors and have no children in school so I found it really hard to find a professional who could sign my photo. Yet I know many trustworthy upright citizens! Stupid, I agree.

I've a feeling that all this business about being a professional person relates to the fact that professional people in the categories suggested on the form can in theory be disciplined by their professional bodies if they do something untoward. It doesn't make them better than other people: it simply indicates that they are conscious of the fact that they have to watch their step.

No you are not but a few professionals I know are especially lawyers. With things like passports they are looking for an established member of the community with a stable checkable background.I have signed dozens and am not a professional but an ex policeman.

A jury consists of 12 of the defendant's peers - average citizens. And God doesn't have anything to do with anything.

I wouldn't say the fact you aren't a professional makes you untrustworthy, but your user name does
