Pretty sure thats just an ugly rumour. If it did happen then there are plenty of others like Skype, google talk, yahoo messenger, ICQ,.....

It's not true, the rumour has been going on for years.

If they did charge people would just move to Yahoo, ICQ, AOL, etc.. So they will never do it. They can really only make money on them by offering extras.
