This is a very complex question but possibly quite important. I think you've hit on a fundamental dynamic that is at the root of many psychological disorders.

The doting mother is doing an individual a profound diservice. A mother who does this is also extremely needy and dependent. She wants the child to remain dependent on her because she is terrified of facing reality alone. She doesn't want to lose her prize possession. This is mis-guided love.

But this blocks the total libido (and psychic energy) of her child from growing and adapting to the soical realities that surround us. The libido then flows in the wrong direction and regresses. On the one hand it wants to regress because it's easier to have someone doting on you and making things easy so that you feel important, etc. But a part of all of us wants to rebel against that sort of suffocating love. Often the mother has threatened to withdraw the love if the child does not also please her. So it is a dangerous contract that paralyzes the natural urge to grow and face challenges. It makes the individual terrified, resentful, rebellious and enraged. When the psychopath kills and tortures he is in a sense attempting to kill his own mother who he cannot overcome. In a sense he is suffocating in his own dependence, fear, hate, resentment, impotence, etc.

When the mother herself refuses to grow and realize the effect she is having on her child, then the situation is dangerous. The child becomes desperate and in some cases this desperation becomes ritualized. The ritual comes from not being able to free himself from the trap.

Many people are mother-ridden. We encounter this all the time. These people are often not co-operative in an objective way because they are crippled by the dependency and the lack of self-reliance that accompanies that dependency . With this lack of self-reliance one feels shame, guilt, rage, fear, and so very low self-esteem. One has no sense of power in the world and the terrible crimes associated with the worst cases of this are attempts to feel power and can make the person arrogant as a compensation for the true underlying feelings of morbid self-hatred.

Your question opens a Pandora's Box of associaetd issues. I think a whole society can be mother ridden and dependent to the point of not even realizing it.

So it is very important for every person to win their independence and not allow one's mother to use guilt as a means of holding back that quest. Of course the same holds for all close interpersonal relationships. Everybody needs to ask themselves sooner or later whether they really do care about the true well-being of others. Do we really want to see others free, balanced, healthy, happy, self-reliant? If we do then we probably would like to be that way ourselves.

There are probably many causes that lead to true psychopathic behavior. But the suffocating mutual dependency with the 'mother force' is probably one of the most fundamental ones.

The correct name is Sociopathic personality disorder. Actually a large number of people suffer from this disorder. Basically these are people who are unable to understand that their actions will have an impact on other people.

Some of these people can learn to cope and fit successfully into society. It is argued that many top corporate people are in fact Sociopaths. Those who are exposed to innappropriate relationships, for example doting mothers, end up not developing the appropriate social skills to fit into society and make the news through a series of brutal murders.

Psychopaths like having the power of people doting on them. If they act like they will deny someone their attention or love, the person who is entranced with them will try even harder. It is not about love or devotion for them it is about power and being in control. This is why they are "psychopathic" probably with a borderline personality disorder and there is no medication or therapy that can cure or even help them. And for the most part they don't want help.

Either: Denial, the mom/wife doesn't want to believe that their boy is crazy and try hard to see him as their golden boy.
Or:It's a passive agressive, displacement thing. Hates mom, can't stand mom, but mom loves him, cant hurt mom! Oh look! A stranger!
Maybe: It's a cover, how many times has the friends and family screamingly denied that their boy is a killer? He's so good to them, so sweet and loving, nonono can't be him. (and that's probibly what he wants...)
Could be: the mom knows what he's done and is terrified to know he could do it to her, and so does all she can to make him love her.
And not all psychos have moms that love them but it looks good in movies. Mary Ann Cotton- killed 21 close family memebers, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream Ripper suspect but killed of 30 women or so, Albert Fish and Ddward Bud claimed "at least 100" children, lured with candy (I think Fish was the base for the movie the candy man...) then her raped murdered and yes, ate them. no close moms husbands or wifes and many more...
