It is dependent on the type of adoption you choose. Private adoptions tend to be higher due to legal fees and sometimes covering expenses for the birth mother. Agency adoptions will vary based on international or US. International adoptions have travel expenses so they tend to be more than US adoptions. However, if you go through your child welfare department for a foster/adopt program, you typically will not have many out-of-pocket expenses.
Whatever the route you choose, adoption is a journey that is worth every penny. There are ups & downs along the road, but they are certainly worth it when your child looks at you for the first time!
Good luck to you.

If you are in the US, you can either contact an adoption agency or go to the Dept. for Children's Services. Either way you have to be screened first and sometimes that takes a quite a while. Through the adoption agency, there is legal fees and things like that. Through the DCS, I think all you have to pay is legal fees but there isn't the promise of a baby, sometimes you have to take an older child if a baby isn't available. There is the option of finding a birth mother who is wishing to adopt her child out and taking on all the financial responsibilities of caring for her while she is pregnant, then when she delivers the baby, you get custody. That still takes a lawyer and a mound of money. Maybe you should contact a lawyer and find out which option is best for you. Good luck & I commend you on wanting to adopt.

I'm not sure, I would like to think it is free to adopt a baby, because you are willing to give an unwanted child a home. Speak to an adoption agency, maybe you might have to pay the legal fees, but I should hope this wont be too expensive, after all, once the child is adopted by you, you will be spending all you money on the child, plus the cost that you can't put a price on, YOUR LOVE.
PS some families might be able to claim legal aid if lawyers fees have to be paid for. But go to a reputable adoption agency

I don't think that's how the process works. In the U.S., there are legal fees that are required to make it official. Costs are offset for the most part, as you can receive a $10,000 tax credit.
